Description
Vintage Airplane is the magazine of the EAA Vintage Aircraft Association. Originally established in 1971, as the Antique/Classic Division of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), the Vintage Aircraft Association gained its present name sometime in the 1980s. The Division magazine was launched in 1972 under the title The Vintage Airplane, with the "querky" feature of printing its front cover and contents in landscape (horizontal) format. With effect from the April 1989 issue, the ‘The’ prefix was dropped and the magazine adopted a portrait (vertical) format. In January 1991 the magazine reverted back to its traditional landscape format.
For 2013 the magazine was redesigned and switched to a portrait format for the front cover, but landscape inside, and expanded to 60 pages.
It is a 36-page magazine devoted to the aircraft and people of the vintage aircraft movement. Vintage Airplane is published monthly, and features articles detailing the restoration and history of aircraft rebuilt by members, as well as historical pieces consisting of the recollections of those who were active during the heyday of these aircraft. Also included on a regular basis are features presenting historical images from the EAA Aviation Foundation’s archives, as well as columns by members who volunteer their time and talents to the Association.
The president of the Division, Espie “Butch” Joyce addresses the membership each month in his column, Straight & Level. E. E. “Buck” Hilbert helps answer members questions in his monthly column, “Pass it to Buck.” Each month, an events calendar keeps members abreast of the goings-on in their local area.
Each year, a comprehensive list of Vintage Aircraft Type Clubs is published in the January issue, and a list of Vintage Aircraft Chapters is also included on a yearly basis.
First issue on sale December 1983. Published monthly until Volume 40 No.12 (December 2012), after which it moved to bi-monthly publication. The editor is now Jim Busha.
