Jeanne Foster challenged the accepted role for women at the turn of the twentieth century. Born on a hardscrabble farm in the Adirondack Mountains in 1879, she was hailed as an important voice in American poetry by 1916 when her first books of verse, Neighbors of Yesterday and Wild Apples were published. She had early success as a model--she was the Harrison Fisher girl of 1903--and later became a journalist for the American Review of Reviews. In 1918, she met John Quinn, patron of the arts, which placed her in the middle of some of the most important literary and artistic movements in the twentieth century. She counted among her friends John Butler and William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Pablo Picasso, and Constantin Brancusi. This book reveals her dark affair with Aleister Crowley and her great friendship with Tomas Masaryk of Czechoslovakia. ESSENTIAL for all parents and educators to read

As an elementary educator for the last fifteen years, I finally found a book that put all the frustration and wondering of why kids come to school struggling, drained, and overwhelmed. Borba states, "We are creating strivers, not thinkers, produced to be test-takers while missing the opportunity to be people."
She points out that we are all running on empty. In her book, she discusses the 7 core strengths that kids need in order to shine. Thrivers not only provides readers with current research, but it has practical and easy tips that both parents and educators can do to help foster a new generation of thrivers and not strivers.
If you are worried about your children's mental health, depression, anxiety, and stress, you must read this book. This book comes at a time when we all must work together to move the pendulum of what achievement looks like in 2021 and reimagine education for our youth, tweens, teens, and young adults.

A highly readable mix of practical strategies, engaging anecdotes and research-based insights, Thrivers underscores the importance of our kids' innate character strengths for their success and happiness. I found this book perfectly timed, given all the pandemic-related stress our teens have had on top of everything else! Borba’s advice on recognizing and nurturing what really matters makes this book a parenting must-have (and I’ve read plenty of them).

Helpful pinpointing which traits to focus on
Format: Hardcover
I loved the format of the book, how are you take a diagnostic test and then read the sections that pertain to the character traits that you want to strengthen in your child. But when I read the chapters, I was disappointed. I was hoping for new information. If I had never read a book on how to support my child’s development and education, I would have been delighted.
